Sediment Cores Track Timing Hiccups in Earth's Magnetic Field Flips
Every so often (in geologic time) Earth's magnetic field does a flip. The north and south magnetic poles gradually trade places in a phenomenon called a geomagnetic reversal. Scientists long thought this happened every ten thousand years or so. However, new evidence from deep ocean cores show that at least two ancient reversals didn't follow that script. One took about 18,000 years to flip and the other took 70,000 years. Such lengthy time lapses could have seriously affected Earth's atmospheric

Gold and Silver crash: Gold prices fell 2.3 to 4,981 today. Silver plunged 8.8 in a sharp market sell-off. Investors are reacting to strong US jobs data. The US added 130,000 jobs in January. Unemployment dropped to 4.3 . This reduced hopes of an early Federal Reserve rate cut. The US dollar strengthened. Higher rates hurt gold and silver prices. Traders are booking profits after a strong rally. Volatility may continue.

[2602.05024] Dynamics of the coronal magnetic field in the 2022-10-02 X-class flare
Solar flares are driven by release of free magnetic energy and often associated with restructurization of the magnetic field topology. Yet, observations of evolving magnetic field in the flaring volume are limited to very few cases including the 2017-09-10 X8.2 limb flare; thus, a verification of whether a similar evolution takes place in other solar flares is needed. Here we report one more, 2022-10-02, X1.1 class solar flare but seen on disk, whose microwave data permit mapping the magnetic fi

In May 2024, extraordinary solar activity triggered a powerful solar storm, impacting Earth and producing the extreme geomagnetic storm of May 10-11, the most intense since 2003. This had significant effects on the magnetosphere, leading to the creation of a new long-lasting component of relativistic electrons and to flux changes in the South-Atlantic Anomaly. Here we present radiation-belt observations made by the Calorimetric Electron Telescope (CALET) on the International Space Station. Speci

Some really unique science can be done during a total solar eclipse. Totality is the one time we can see the elusive corona of the Sun, the pearly white segment of our host star’s lower atmosphere where space weather activity originates. The trouble is, totality is fleeting. What researchers really need are eclipses on demand. ESA’s innovative Proba-3 mission does just that, by making use of a free-flying occulting disk. Launched in late 2024, we’re now seeing some unique science and image

Solar flares are the most powerful, magnetically driven, explosions in the heliosphere. The nature of magnetic energy release in the solar corona that heats the plasma and accelerates particles in a flare, however, remains poorly understood. Here, we report high-resolution coronal observations of a flare by the Solar Orbiter mission that reveal initially weaker but rapid reconnection events, on timescales of a few seconds at most, leading to a more prominent activity of a similar nature that exp
